Abstract

This study aims to identify the extent to which regional changes and events have influenced Al-Jazeera’s media policy regarding the Syrian file. The study addresses Al-Jazeera’s role in media coverage, the stages of its reporting on current events in Syria, and its professionalism in relation to these events. Additionally, the study explores the impact of regional variables, particularly the Gulf crisis, on the course of the Syrian conflict and how Al-Jazeera has responded to these changes. The study also investigates the repercussions of the Gulf crisis on the Syrian opposition and Al-Jazeera’s handling of the situation.

The study employed a descriptive analytical approach, selecting a sample from Al-Jazeera’s First Signal bulletin, and designing an expert questionnaire. The focus of our study on determining whether the Gulf crisis affected Al-Jazeera’s coverage of the Syrian events during the period 2017-2018. The study concluded that the Gulf crisis affected Al-Jazeera’s coverage of the Syrian events, noticed by reducing the time allocated for the Syrian issue, and changes in the types of journalism used, the news sources relied upon, the presentation style of the bulletins, and the topics covered by the channel. All of this was in favor of covering the crisis. In addition, the Gulf crisis had political, military, economic and media repercussions on the Syrian file. The biggest loser from the Gulf-Gulf dispute was the Syrian opposition, while the Syrian regime reaped the fruits of this dispute.
